Jai Lucas is one of the best young coaches in the game — he just hasn’t received the recognition yet, largely because he has only been a head coach for one season. Lucas had a brilliant year one at Miami, winning 26 games and earning an NCAA Tournament victory over Missouri. It typically takes a new coach several years to build a program from the ground up, but Lucas did not skip a beat after accepting the job. This was no fluke. It happened because Jai Lucas knows how to evaluate talent, recruit talent, and construct a roster with purpose.
Lucas went out and assembled an experienced transfer portal class headlined by Malik Reneau and Tre Donaldson, while also landing five-star recruit Shelton Henderson. He rounded the roster out with shooting and size, which ultimately resulted in the 2025-26 Miami Hurricanes becoming a remarkably cohesive group. This is what Jai Lucas does — he sees the vision and makes it happen.

That vision was shaped by years spent learning under some of the best coaches in the country. Lucas began his coaching career at Texas under Rick Barnes, where he quickly established himself as a premier recruiter. When Shaka Smart took over the program, Lucas continued to thrive on the recruiting trail, playing a key role in landing elite big men Mo Bamba, Jarrett Allen, and Jaxson Hayes — all of whom went on to earn All-Big 12 honors. His success caught the attention of John Calipari, who brought Lucas to Kentucky. There is no better classroom for recruiting than a Calipari program, and Lucas took full advantage, helping bring in numerous five-star prospects during his tenure in Lexington.

His time at Kentucky was brief, however, as an opportunity to join Jon Scheyer’s staff at Duke soon followed. At Duke, Lucas served as both the lead recruiter and defensive coordinator. He played a central role in the recruitment of Cooper Flagg and both Boozer twins, while also helping build one of the most efficient defenses in the country — the Blue Devils finished top five in defensive efficiency in 2024-25. That combination of recruiting pedigree and defensive acumen made Lucas a highly attractive head coaching candidate, and Miami came calling.

The Hurricanes are positioned to be one of the premier programs in the ACC heading into the 2026-27 season. They return five-star forward Shelton Henderson and add 2026 five-star prospect Caleb Gaskins, ranked 11th in ESPN’s Top 100. Lucas also had another strong portal cycle, bringing in exactly what this roster needed. Academe Lewis, a top-20 transfer prospect and former five-star recruit, arrives after his freshman season at Villanova and adds immediate offensive upside. Somto Cyril, the 21st-ranked transfer portal prospect, was one of the most dominant defensive centers in the country last season at Georgia — a big, physical presence who will anchor the paint.
Jai Lucas recruits talent that is compatible, builds rosters that mesh, and creates teams with a genuine synergy that starts with the coach himself. Year one was just the beginning. This is the start of an empire — and the Hurricanes will be atop the ACC for years to come.
