Angel Reese & Alysha Clark React to Nneka Ogwumike Retiring

by Landon Buford | Aug 27, 2026

Last week, Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike announced that 2026 would be the final season of her Hall of Fame career.

"I've learned there's power in knowing when to walk away," Ogwumike said in a statement. "For so long, that strength meant finding a way to keep pushing. Now, it means recognizing when you feel complete. I find myself grateful, fulfilled, and at peace with everything this game has given me and everything I've poured into it."

As the news began to circulate online, members of the basketball community started to react. WNBA commissioner Cath Engelbert released a statement which read, There is no telling the story of the WNBA's recent growth and evolution without Nneka Ogwumike," WNBA commissioner Engelbert said. "Her extraordinary career has been defined not only by excellence, but by the way she has led and lifted those around her. She is a champion and MVP, one of the most accomplished players of all time, and a fierce competitor who has represented the very best our game has to offer. For 15 seasons, Nneka has led with grace and conviction, competed with an unmistakable spark, and carried herself with a generosity and thoughtfulness that have earned the admiration of everyone across our game.

"Nneka will retire at the end of this season, leaving the WNBA much better than she found it,  a testament not only to the player she has been, but to the person and leader she is. I have been fortunate to work closely with Nneka over the years and have been inspired by her passion and unwavering commitment to the players. It has been a privilege to watch her remarkable journey, and while there is still more basketball to be played this season, we congratulate her on an extraordinary career and look forward to celebrating her in the months ahead."

Her former teammate Alysha Clark recently spoke about her spearheading the new WNBA CBA agreement and making history with Ogwumike.

"I mean, a legend, right? She's been one of the most efficient players, and you know what she's meant for this game, not only on the court, but off the court as well. Her leadership, her presence, her dominance. I saw her interview in the boardroom, where she talked about a conversation she had with Aja (Wilson), about not letting people overlook your greatness just because you're consistent. She's been so consistent for the entirety of her career, and she's going to be sorely missed in all aspects,” said Clark.

“I'm grateful that I finally got the opportunity to play alongside her. We talked about it for so many years, and then to be alongside her on the PA and made history together. To sit in that space and help change the trajectory of this league with someone of her stature, someone who's been president of the PA for so long, I think that's really great.”

She added, “So I don't know who's going to replace my girl, but it's going to be somebody great, and I know she'll have a say in who she hands that torch to. Whoever takes it understands what's at stake and the seat they have to fill, and I know they'll do a great job."

On Monday night Atlanta Dream All-Star Angel Reese talking about playing Nneka for the final time this season.

“This is my last time playing Nneka. Obviously, going to be a great surreal moment for her and for me as well. But obviously, we want to get the win,” According Nick Hamilton of Nitecast Media.

Of course, the dream out the win over the Sparks 78-71 with Angel Reese breaking the WNBA single-game rebounding record with 26 rebounds, surpassing the previous record held by Hall of Famer Chamique Holdsclaw's record of 24 rebounds, set on May 23, 2003, for Washington, according to ESPN.
